Steve Strange’s pal, Martin Kemp, talked about his week in Flexipop!’s first anniversary issue. He still lived at home with mum and dad and brother Gary in Islington. He describes seven days of hedonism in a string of clubs – Club For Heroes, Rumours, Blackouts, Beat-Route, Heaven. Plus parties, wine bars, restaurants etc. ‘I know it sounds as if I go out a lot, but I used to go out just as much when I was on the dole. The only difference now is you have to be more glamorous about it.’

Seven Days Of Trans-Europe Excess was our description of Phil Lynott’’s Working Week. Thin Lizzy visited Paris, Frankfurt, Mannheim, Saarbrucken, Stuttgart and Berlin on tour. In Paris Phil attended a party thrown by Princess Caroline of Monaco where he met Andy Warhol. He remembered a friend he had in Frankfurt called Cookie who had died, in his 30s, of a heart attack. ‘I decide not to sit and wallow over him over pints of beer – I take death very privately.’ Five years later Phil met up with Cookie in the eternal night-club where the drinks are free.

Neil Matthews took the pic of Toyah that accompanied her Working Week and it went on to become one of her most famous photos. Toyah said she rose at seven most mornings and spent three hours writing songs and doing exercises. But she did get pissed on Monday in Newcastle after recording a song and continued boozing at Heathrow after flying back to London. She also went to the dentist twice, no less.
